Oil on linen 2003 ~  191x80cm / 75"x32" / Signed lower right

‘Composition Looking East’ was inspired by the view from the balcony of my apartment  in Glebe, Sydney. It was a magical urban vista that changed character throughout the day under the trajectory of the bright Australian sun, becoming quite a spectacle as the setting sun hit the glass covered skyscrapers in a magnificent flare of intense golden light.

Returning in 2003 from three years abroad had left me feeling like a stranger in the very city I once called home. The stunning view facing east had a way of uplifting  my weary traveller’s soul, and in time plugged me straight back into the very heart of the city.

I painted in the early mornings, the easel adjacent to the large window, my view to the city unobstructed. In that first light of the day the colours of the cityscape appeared muted, its angles and facades harmonised in a  wash of grey, softened and subdued; a wild animal soon to be waking from sleep. Where did each vertical column begin and end…?

This is the personality of Sydney I worked to capture in this painting. It is a handsome and stylized piece that is very much keeping with the Cubist style I was so passionate about at the time.

A rare opportunity to acquire this painting which has been in a private collection in Sydney since its completion ~ Offers considered.
