Viridity (vɪˈrɪdɪtɪ) n.

  1. (Colours) the quality or state of being green; greenness; verdancy
  2. innocence, youth, or freshness

St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a German writer, composer, philosopher, Benedictine abbess and visionary, and left behind a great legacy of creative gifts, one in particular – ‘Viriditas’ or ‘greening power’. She talked of “the exquisite greening of trees and grasses” and “earth’s lush greening.” She says that all of creation and humanity in particular is “showered with greening refreshment, the vitality to bear fruit”. Clearly creativity and greening power are intimately connected here.  This painting is reminiscent of the striking foliage and lush green colours of my childhood growing up in the North Queensland tropics .
